Bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Thames in Reading (UK)

So ordinary and yet so very special… This slender, graceful bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Thames was built by Hollandia Infra in 2015. It is a steel cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 122 metres, including a free span of 69 metres. The bridge is supported by a steel pylon with a height of 37 metres. In total, some 560 tonnes of steel have been installed.

The bridge was manufactured and delivered to the construction site as a “construction kit” consisting of 9 bridge sections, a pylon and another 5 bridges. There are several aspects to this project that have received specific attention. For example, the bridge was built in a dense urban area, which made special demands on the supply of the various bridge components. One of the client’s requirements was that the Thames should not be closed off during construction. This resulted in a well thought-out construction phasing and coordination with the parties involved. The close cooperation between the civil contractor, architects, designers and Hollandia Infra resulted in this eye-catching bridge. The bridge is finished with specially polished stainless steel parts and use is made of corten steel handrail panels that depict a reed belt. Reflective parts were also placed on various bridge components, giving the total design a unique appearance, both during the day and at night.
