Euvelgunner bridge - Hollandia

Euvelgunner bridge

Hollandia Infra has been contracted by Combination Herepoort to replace the Hoge Euvelgunner bridge in Groningen. The replacement of this bridge on the A7 highway is part of the long-term project Approach Ring South in Groningen.

Approach Ring South is the large-scale reconstruction of Groningen’s southern ring road. This main gateway to the city is threatening to become overcrowded because of the major growth Groningen is currently experiencing. The southern ring road is about twelve kilometers long and runs straight through the city of Groningen.

Hollandia Infra is responsible for the design and realization of the bridge, including the hydraulic drive and the complete technical installations, which we will carry out together with subcontractors Bosch Rexroth and ENGIE Services Nederland NV.

Process

In early March, we started the fabrication of the new High Euvelgunner Bridge. And in the second week of May, both bridges of the new Euvelgunner Bridge were tilted. In cooperation with Sarens, the structures weighing as much as 114 and 124 tons were lifted upright into the air.

A 7-week traffic interruption was scheduled for the summer of 2023 to replace the bridge themselves and the installations. The two bascule bridges of the High Euvelgunner Bridge were replaced, as well as the historic drive system in the basement, which was replaced with a hydraulic system.

The steel components of the movement system (seats, columns, gantries and tie rods) were brought in through a recess in the back wall of the bridge basement and installed at height under the basement roof, by our colleagues from Hollandia Services from Sint Nicolaasga. The hydraulic cylinders and the drive HPU were supplied by Hycom Inc.

Since September 1, 2023, the Ring Road South Groningen is open again and traffic is driving over the new Euvelgunner bridge. With this, this project – started at Hollandia in 2016 – has almost come to an end.
