With the presentation of the certificate for CE marking to demissionary minister Mark Harbers of Infrastructure and Water Management, the renovation of the Haringvliet Bridge’s valve has been officially completed. The marking shows that the bridge can be operated safely for tall maritime traffic.
The renovation of the valve of the Haringvliet Bridge was commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat and carried out by contractor combination Mobilis and Croonwolter&dros (CMCH) together with Hollandia Infra and Machinefabriek Rusthoven. The work started in early 2023 with the removal of the existing installations from the bridge basement. At that time, the bridge could no longer be operated for high traffic. In June and July of that year, the valve, motion gear and technical systems for operation, control and monitoring were completely renewed. In addition, the operating location moved to the Volkerak locks. For this work, the bridge was closed to all road traffic for eight weeks. In autumn, the new technical systems were extensively tested and the bridge operators were trained to work with the systems. Since the beginning of October, the bridge was operated occasionally on demand and tall maritime traffic could again sail from the Hollands Diep to the Haringvliet without detours.
In late 2023 and early 2024, the technical documentation, such as manuals and maintenance plans, was completed. With all these documents, the CE mark was requested. The CE mark is a statement indicating that the Haringvliet Bridge’s movement mechanism meets all European safety, health and environmental protection requirements.
