By order of the municipality of Alphen a/d Rijn the civil contractor Mobilis TBI has realised the” Koningin Máxima Bridge” with access roads. Hollandia Infra, as a cooperation partner of Mobilis, took care of the steel constructions and the movement work. The bridge was commissioned on 21st December 2016 and officially opened on 6th April 2017.
The tender was won by Mobilis and Hollandia Infra mainly on the development of a sophisticated working method. This made it possible to guarantee minimum disruption and maximum safety for the surrounding area during the execution of the work. This working method also guaranteed that a high level of sustainability was achieved for the entire project. The work was carried out on the basis of Design & Construct (D&C). The Queen Máxima Bridge is a modern designed energy neutral double bascule bridge (type “tail bridge”) with a passage of 14.2 meters. The moveable part of the Queen Máxima Bridge consists of two adjacent tail bridges, one of which also features a bicycle/pedestrian path. On either side of a bridge, there are so-called ‘tails’, with the outer tail being wider than the inner tail. The bridges are driven by two separate hydraulic drives consisting of two hydraulic cylinders and a hydraulic generator. The Queen Máxima Bridge offers two dual carriageways and a cycle path and footpath, which rises over five metres above the Old Rijn and its banks. The bridge is moved with approximately 400 tonnes of ballast. The larger East Bridge weighs 280 tonnes and the smaller West Bridge 230 tonnes. The two bridge decks are about 35.5 metres wide in total, with the East Bridge measuring about 21 metres and the West Bridge about 14.5 metres.
