Hollandia was commissioned by Volker Construction International to construct the Simpson Bay swingbridge. This steel swingbridge with a length of 68 meter is part of a total 726 meter long traffic bridge over the Simpson Bay.
The new Simpson Bay Bridge forms a beautiful landmark in the lagoon of the tropical island of St. Maarten.
Execution in the lagoon of St. Maarten!
Hollandia designed, manufactured and assembled the swingbridge for the client. The cable-stayed swingbridge weighs approximately 450 tons and has two steel pylons. The rotation point is in the middle. The bridge offers 2 lanes for fast traffic and 2 lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. In view of the local situation, the choice was made for an assembly method without cranes and other lifting equipment. Another special feature of this project is the transport of the entire rotating bridge on a ship at sea. This ship also had to be narrow enough to pass the existing narrow bridge on St Maarten of just 16 metres on its way to its final destination.
