The new steel bridge for Oostertoegang in Amsterdam is on its way

Hollandia Infra, commissioned by ProRail, is working together with Dura Vermeer and Mammoet to replace four steel railway bridges and one concrete railway bridge on the eastern side of Amsterdam Central Station. The steel bridges have reached the end of their lifespan. Last summer, work began on removing the first bridge, the northernmost concrete trough bridge. The new bridge, currently en route to Amsterdam in three parts, is ready to be installed.

The new bridge consists of three sections, each of which is being transported on pontoons from Hollandia Infra in Krimpen aan de IJssel to Amsterdam. On Monday, 18 November, the bridge sections were placed on the pontoons using SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters) and departed for Amsterdam. On Friday, 22 November, the first bridge section was partially submerged and transported from Sea Palace to the Oostertoegang, where it will be installed during the night of 2 to 3 December. To navigate under the lowest bridge along the route, the pontoons and part of the bridge will be submerged. This is achieved by filling ballast tanks with water.

Project Oostertoegang

Starting in 2024, Hollandia Infra, Dura Vermeer, and Mammoet, commissioned by ProRail, will replace four steel railway bridges and one concrete railway bridge on the eastern side of Amsterdam Central Station. Approximately one year is allocated for the replacement of each bridge. During the process, the bridge being replaced will be taken out of service and dismantled. Simultaneously, a new railway bridge will be constructed at an external location, transported to Amsterdam by water, and positioned in place using SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters), specialised vehicles designed for moving heavy loads. The new railway bridges will have a monumental design that complements the character of Amsterdam.

The Oostertoegang project and the replacement of these five railway bridges are part of the PHS Amsterdam Centraal project. Over the next ten years, the railway infrastructure at and around Amsterdam Central Station will undergo significant redevelopment, enabling more trains to operate to and from the station by 2030. These upgrades to the station and its infrastructure are essential to accommodate increased train traffic and future passenger growth.
