Second contract extension multi-year maintenance of storm surge barriers - Hollandia

Second contract extension multi-year maintenance of storm surge barriers

Rijkswaterstaat uses the option to extend the multi-year maintenance contract for the Maeslantkering and Hartelkering storm surge barriers with SHERPA, a combination of Croonwolter&dros and Hollandia Services.

Since April 15th, 2017, the SHERPA combination has been performing the multi-year maintenance on these storm surge barriers. This maintenance contract lasted four years, with client Rijkswaterstaat being able to extend the contract twice by two years.

We are therefore proud that for the second contract extension we have once again received the order and trust from Rijkswaterstaat. A nice confirmation of the successful cooperation with Rijkswaterstaat. Together we create progress. This contract extension commences on April 16, 2023 and runs until April 15, 2025.

Various maintenance activities
As part of the long-term maintenance contract for the Maeslant and Hartel barriers, Croonwolter&dros and Hollandia Services are maintaining the electrical, mechanical and civil engineering installations of both barriers. This involves around 800 different preventive activities each year. In addition to preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance is also carried out to maintain and/or optimize the operation of the flood defenses. Any malfunctions are also picked up and resolved.

Berrie Schouwenaars, projectmanager Hollandia Services:

It is a unique challenge to daily take care of two unique objects together with Rijkswaterstaat that make a substantial contribution to the safety of the Netherlands.

Involved in the possible closure of the barriers
In addition to maintenance work on the storm surge barriers, the combination also contributes to the Rijkswaterstaat Operational Team for the possible closure of the barriers in the event of high water levels. This involves good mutual cooperation between all parties. Both within the SHERPA VOF and with the manager and the IPM team (PPO) of Rijkswaterstaat. The lines of communication are short and transparent about what needs to be done.

Simon Voorberg & Dennis Claassen, contractmanagers Rijkswaterstaat

During the past six years we have worked well together to have the flood defenses available to protect the hinterland. The success factor is a stable project organization with a lot of skill working with short lines of communication and open communication.
