Dike Zone Alliance together with Waterschap Limburg working on dike reinforcement Arcen

On Wednesday, February 28, the residents of Arcen were introduced to the Dike Zone Alliance’s tender design surrounding the dike reinforcement in Arcen. During the well-attended information meeting, the first impressions of dike reinforcement Arcen were shown. Earlier, Waterschap Limburg announced that this construction combination, consisting of Ploegam, Dura Vermeer and Hollandia Infra, had been admitted to the one-on-one phase. In the coming months, the alliance will work intensively with Waterschap Limburg to reach a final tender. The cooperation between Dijkzone Alliantie and Waterschap Limburg is not new: we are currently working, for example, on dike reinforcement Steyl – Maashoek with the self-closing barrier.

Final price and contract
In the one-on-one phase, the Dike Zone Alliance determines the final price for the self-closing barrier for Arcen-Midden. A process in which cooperation with the Regional Water Board is key. We will complete this part in April, after which we will receive the final contract in the summer of 2024.

Elaborating design
Once the contract has been definitively awarded, we will start the preparatory studies. In this phase we will have in-depth conversations with residents and business owners about the further elaboration of the design and the construction work. After the 2025 construction period we will start with the large-scale construction work on the dike. In accordance with the agreements with the water board, we will have until December 31, 2027 to complete the project.

What are we going to build?
During the information meeting, visitors were able to get acquainted with the first impressions of the tender design. Most striking is the self-closing barrier. It is a so-called Vlotterkering®. The Vlotterkering® consists of a valve that rises automatically at high tide, holding back the water. When the barrier is not up, the valve is part of the garden or terrace of residents or business owners.
