Renovation of the Westlandgrachtsluis: from manually operated to electromechanical

Following the ROGO projects Akersluis and Cramersluis, Hollandia Services has spent the past six months working on a third, similar lock. The Westlandgrachtsluis is a multidisciplinary project in which a complete lock has been renovated in a short time: from the control building to the chamber walls, and from the lock gates to the mooring quay outside the chamber.

To restore the masonry of the walls and inject the expansion joints, the lock had to be completely pumped dry. Given the high groundwater level around the lock, we placed 900 tons of weight (big bags and concrete blocks) in the chamber to compensate for the buoyant force of the soil. After that, we were able to:

  • Construct four machine rooms
  • Install a concrete chamber for each lock gate, including control systems and gate drives
  • Install various electrical components such as electrical cabinets, desks, lighting, and navigation signals
  • Equip the lock gates with leveling cylinders connected to the leveling valves

Finally, we renovated the quay, seepage screens, and fendering, and conserved all steel components of both the lock and the gates.
