Renovation of the mechanical operating equipment of the Oosterscheldekering

38 years after the Oosterscheldekering was commissioned, major maintenance of its 124 mechanical operating systems is necessary. Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Hollandia Services is carrying out a major renovation, replacing or modifying components to meet current technical standards.

As a pilot, six mechanical operating systems were previously renovated to determine the optimal maintenance and replacement strategy for the remaining 118 systems. The aim: to keep the barrier maintenance-free for the next 50 years. In this video, we show the work being carried out, while project managers Jasmijn Lip and Johan Hertong explain the process.

Following this successful pilot, the Hollandia Services project team has started a follow-up contract for the renovation of another six mechanical operating systems. This new phase officially began with a kick-off on 1 October, during which the team discussed the strategy for the upcoming work. Preparations are now in full swing, enabling four mechanical operating systems to be dismantled in April 2025 and renovated in the workshop. The remaining two will follow later.

For this follow-up contract, we are once again working closely with our specialised partners: Van Halteren Technologies, Gelders Staalstraal- en Schildersbedrijf B.V., Van Grinsven Transport, Jenniskens Kraanverhuur B.V., Istimewa Elektro B.V., PT-Structural Design & Analysis B.V. and DuoTec B.V.

With these renovations, we are ensuring that the Oosterscheldekering is fit for the future, so that it continues to function as intended for decades to come.
