First sections of the new cycling underpass at the Cruquius Bridge installed

The first sections of the new cycling underpass at the Cruquius Bridge (N201) have been installed! The underpass was constructed in five parts at Hollandia Infra and transported last week by ship from Krimpen aan den IJssel to the construction site in Cruquius. The transport of the largest section – 70 metres long and weighing 103 tonnes – was an impressive sight.

Commissioned by the Province of North Holland, the contractor consortium Van Hattum en Blankevoort and Hollandia Infra will complete the underpass in the coming period. The five parts will be assembled on site, after which finishing works such as lighting, railings and road markings will be added. If everything goes according to plan, cyclists will be able to use the new underpass by the end of 2025.

The underpass – which will enable cyclists to safely cross beneath the Cruquiusweg (N201) – is constructed from weather-resistant steel. This circular and sustainable material has a long service life and requires little maintenance, contributing to future-proof infrastructure.

Renewal of the Cruquius Bridge
The Cruquius Bridge is being constructed between 2023 and 2025. The new bridge is designed to be circular, energy-neutral and as low-maintenance as possible, following the principles of Industrial, Flexible and Demountable (IFD) construction. The bridge towards Heemstede will be replaced and widened, creating more space for cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge towards Hoofddorp will undergo major maintenance. With the new bridge, safety and traffic flow for cyclists, pedestrians and road users on the N201 will be improved. The works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
