Nord Stream, also known as the Baltic Sea Gas Pipeline or Baltic Pipeline, is a dual gas pipeline for the transport of Russian natural gas through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Construction began in early 2006 and the gas in the first pipeline began flowing on 8 November 2011. Gazprom has the largest share in the project with 51%, Wintershall and E.ON are both participating with 20% and the Dutch Gasunie with 9%.

Russia is the main exporter of gas to Europe. For this pipeline the gas will come from the Joezhno-Roesskoje oil and gas field, located in the north of Western Siberia (Jamalia). Of Russia’s total gas exports 75% go to Europe and Europe covers about 40% of its gas needs through imports from Russia.
The Nord Stream pipeline has a capacity of approximately 55 billion m³ of gas per year, which is about half of the annual gas consumption in Germany in 2005. The cost of the seabed section was estimated at €4 billion.
