The London Eye - Hollandia

The London Eye

To commemorate the change of the millennium, a gigantic Ferris wheel was set up on the south bank of the Thames in London, symbolising the gradual progression of time and an “eye” on the new millennium. This Ferris wheel, with a diameter of 135 metres, is suspended over the Thames on a single support and is located in the Jubilee Gardens, in the centre of London.

Hollandia won several awards with the London Eye, including the National and European Steel Award. At the time of construction, this type of Ferris wheel was unique in its kind.

Hollandia, the main contractor, designed, constructed and installed this spectacular structure in close collaboration with various subcontractors over a 15-month period.

The instruction given to us by the client was: The design, construction, preservation, assembly and turnkey delivery of the “British Airways London Eye” (formerly known as the “Millennium Wheel”).

Since 9 March 2000, approx. 100,000 visitors enjoy the magnificent views across London and its surroundings each week.
